Motor Power Formulas

For a three-phase AC motor, the Electrical Input Power (the active power billed by the utility) is calculated using voltage, current, and the power factor. To find the useful Mechanical Output Power at the shaft, you must factor in the motor's internal efficiency losses.

Electrical Input Power (kW): $$ P_{in} = \frac{\sqrt{3} \times V \times I \times PF}{1000} $$
Mechanical Output Power (HP): $$ HP = \frac{P_{in} \times \eta}{0.746} $$

Where $V$ = Voltage, $I$ = Amperage, $PF$ = Power Factor (cos $\phi$), and $\eta$ = Efficiency.
